Parkway Elementary

Summary:

Parkway Elementary is a public elementary school in Frederick, Maryland, serving 258 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Frederick County Public Schools district, which is ranked 6th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Parkway Elementary consistently ranks in the top 25% of Maryland elementary schools, with students performing significantly better than the state and district averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) assessments. For example, in 2023-2024, 44.2% of Parkway students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 32.1% for the district and 24.1% for the state. The school's ELA proficiency rates are also impressive, with 68.8% of students proficient or better, compared to 60% for the district and 48.4% for the state. Parkway's performance is particularly strong in 3rd and 4th grade ELA, where proficiency rates exceed 65%. The school also has a relatively diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more balanced than nearby schools, which tend to have a larger proportion of either White or minority students.

While Parkway Elementary outperforms the district and state averages, some nearby schools, such as Carroll Creek Montessori Public Charter and Frederick Classical Charter, also demonstrate strong academic performance, particularly in ELA. However, these charter schools tend to have lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students compared to Parkway Elementary and the other nearby public schools. The low student-teacher ratio at Parkway Elementary, ranging from 14 to 16.5 students per teacher, may be a contributing factor to the school's academic success, as it allows for more individualized attention and support for students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The Principal, Guidance Counselor, Secretary and Maintenance Staff are Excellent! Love the Arts and Music Teachers too! This year our teacher gets a 5 star rating! Best in 3 years. But former teacher would have received 3 of 5 stars. The school needs funding to hire a more qualified nurse assistant. There is no school nurse and the nurse is shared from several schools which is frightening when your child has a condition. Excellent playground! School also needs funding to expand the school since there are 3 portable classrooms and many of these have been there for over 20 years. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
