J. C. Parks Elementary School

Summary:

J. C. Parks Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Indian Head, Maryland, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 638 and is part of the Charles County Public Schools district.

J. C. Parks Elementary School faces several challenges, including a significantly higher percentage of African American (62.38%) and Hispanic (17.24%) students compared to the state average, consistently low academic performance with proficiency rates below state and district averages, and a high percentage of students (over 55%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families. Nearby schools like Dr. James Craik Elementary and Mary H. Matula Elementary, which serve more diverse student populations, have significantly higher academic performance and rankings compared to J. C. Parks, highlighting the potential for improvement.

To address these challenges, the school and district may need to implement targeted strategies to address achievement gaps, learn from the practices of higher-performing nearby schools, and provide additional resources and support to meet the unique needs of its student population, such as comprehensive social-emotional learning programs and targeted academic interventions.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have serious concerns about the way the teachers at this school speak to children and the years of experience that they don't have as educators. Each year it seems as though a new "flock" of straight out of college teachers begin there careers at J.C. Parks. I have yet to see a lot of familiar faces each year at back to school night. My son has been enrolled there for 3 years. The curriculum is not challenging for gifted students and many of the assignments are remedial. I was bothered to discover that there is no longer a social studies curriculum for the fourth graders. We are in the process of transferring our son to a private school because JC Parks does not have a quality curriculum. If you are considering moving to the area, then I would highly suggest you visit the school first. This is our biggest regret. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
