Eva Turner Elementary School

Summary:

Eva Turner Elementary School is a public elementary school in Waldorf, Maryland, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Charles County Public Schools district. With a predominantly African American and Hispanic student population, the school faces significant academic and socioeconomic challenges compared to nearby schools in the district.

Academically, Eva Turner Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Maryland elementary schools, with only 8.3% of students proficient or better in Mathematics and just 9.5% proficient or better in 5th grade English Language Arts, far below the district and state averages. This low performance may be linked to the school's high percentage of students from low-income families, with 68.68% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. In contrast, the nearby Mary H. Matula Elementary School, C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School, and William B. Wade Elementary School generally perform better on academic measures and have more diverse student populations.

The data suggests that Eva Turner Elementary School could benefit from a comprehensive review of its educational programs, teaching practices, and support services to identify areas for improvement and implement targeted interventions. Collaboration with the higher-performing nearby schools in the district could provide valuable insights and best practices, while addressing the socioeconomic challenges faced by the school's student population may also be a crucial factor in improving academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Why are we forced to send our children to the worst ranked school in Charles County just because of the location of our house? Sending your child to this school is a disservice to them, and they should have the option to attend a different school. This would automatically drop attendance by 50% and maybe then the Maryland School Board would do something about the horrific level of education and the rampant racism without consequences. Open Quote Very Poor! Eva Turner has been by far the worse school that my child has ever attended. He will not be attending this school next year. The communication from the staff from the principal down does not exist. I have even contact the county school board and never received a response. I am very disappointment with this elementary school and the lack of communication and involvrmrnt that they have been willing to show. Very sad!! Close Quote

Open Quote Eva Turner Elementary School is designated a Title I School and as such receives additional funding to meet the needs of its student population. This is my daughter's second year at the school. I was initially concerned that this was the school zoned for our neighborhood. However, I'm pleased to say that the teachers that she has had thus far seem to genuinely care about their students and their success. Nevertheless, if your student is advanced or has special needs, you as the parent will have to make sure that they are identified and be proactive in getting them the differentiated instruction needed. The principal is outstanding and really does make herself available to parents when they need to meet with her and she always returns phone calls promptly. While there are some enrichment activities available for K-2nd grade, unfortunately, gifted education services are not available at this school until 3rd grade. Therefore, if your student enters first grade but is academically at the third grade level, this may be a problem as there is no documented procedure in place for these situations, or parents are not made aware of them. Overall, I would say that Turner is an average school in Charles County, MD and the test scores could be improved by a proactive approach to identifying advanced children and focusing on them just as much as they do the children that are not yet proficient. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
