Rising Sun Middle School

Summary:

Rising Sun Middle School is a public middle school in Rising Sun, Maryland, serving 619 students in grades 6-8 and part of the Cecil County Public Schools district.

Rising Sun Middle School consistently ranks in the top quarter of Maryland middle schools, with strong academic performance on state assessments that exceeds the county and state averages. The school's students excel in core subjects like English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the school's Algebra I program stands out, with 71.8% of students proficient or better, compared to just 16.2% in the Cecil County district and 20% statewide. However, the school has a predominantly white student population, with low representation of African American and Asian students, which may warrant further investigation. Additionally, the school is serving a growing population of economically disadvantaged students, with the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch increasing from 26.13% to 37.96% in recent years.

When compared to other middle schools in the area, such as Bel Air Middle and Southampton Middle in the Harford County Public Schools district, Rising Sun Middle School generally outperforms its peers on academic measures, particularly in English Language Arts and Algebra I. However, some nearby schools have higher overall academic performance and a more diverse student population, which may provide valuable insights for Rising Sun Middle School to consider as it continues to support the academic success of all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Staffing does not handle bullying very well at all. They make the victim at fault and do not listen and accept everyone's side to be heard just the bullying students get to speak there mind and have their friends side with them when the victim only gets to tell their side and have no one else talked to that can defend them. It also doesn't help that the staff also play part to making the victim feel very unwanted as well as very frightened and not welcomed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
