Golden Ring Middle

Summary:

Golden Ring Middle is a public magnet middle school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with an enrollment of 903 students. The school faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools, including consistently low academic performance, a student population with higher percentages of African American and Hispanic students, and a higher percentage of students from low-income families.

Golden Ring Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom third of Maryland middle schools over the past 10 years, with its students performing significantly below the Baltimore County and Maryland state averages on standardized tests. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 5.1% of Golden Ring Middle students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 19.3% in Baltimore County and 24.1% statewide. The school's racial/ethnic composition is also notably different from nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American (59.91%) and Hispanic (12.96%) students and a lower percentage of White (16.17%) and Asian (5.87%) students.

Additionally, Golden Ring Middle serves a predominantly low-income community, with a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 51.02% to 70.98% over the past three school years. This is significantly higher than the nearby schools, which have free/reduced-price lunch rates ranging from 40.42% to 73.94%. Despite the higher spending per student at Golden Ring Middle ($15,428 in 2020-2021) compared to the surrounding schools, the school's academic performance remains significantly lower, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to the challenges the school faces.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is terrible. I attempted to substitute here and the students were violent, aggressive, and cussing me out. They threatened me and I ended up just leaving. I received absolutely no help when I called the office. Apparently, a student has to either physically hit someone or commit arson to get the administration's attention. I heard that they still do not do anything because they are trying to save their numbers on student suspensions. I'm going back to school to be a lawyer so I can shut this place down. Steer clear of this hellhole. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
