Shady Spring Elementary

Summary:

Shady Spring Elementary is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 373 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Shady Spring Elementary faces significant academic challenges, with consistently lower performance compared to state and district averages in both mathematics and English language arts proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's overall mathematics proficiency rate was 24.1%, compared to the state average of 24.1% and the district average of 19.3%. The school's student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, also perform significantly below their peers in the state and district. Shady Spring Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

While Shady Spring Elementary struggles academically, some of the nearby schools, such as Fullerton Elementary and Orems Elementary, perform better on standardized tests and have higher school rankings. This suggests that the challenges faced by Shady Spring Elementary may be unique to the school or its specific student population, which has a significantly higher percentage of African American (59.25%) and Hispanic (22.52%) students compared to the nearby schools. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 48.35% to 73.89% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past three school years, may also be a contributing factor to the school's academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am SO glad that we were able to move so that I did not have to deal with this school anymore. Of the schools my children have attended in MD this school is by far THE WORST!!! The PPW as well as the office were most unhelpful. There were multiple issues while my children attended and in order to have anything resolved I had to call the Board of Education. At one point when my children (Kindergarten and second grade) started taking the bus they were dropped off in front of the jail instead of their daycare!! I could never get a straight answer out of anyone who works there and EVERY SINGLE PERSON tells you something different. The most unorganized school ever!! The ONLY bright spot to this school is the teachers. Both were amazingly fantastic! Close Quote

Open Quote All I hear from the kids are "we have another substitute". I ask them daily what they've learned in school, and most of the time they'd tell me it's the same stuff they were learning from months ago. This is a sorry piece of crap school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
