Pikesville Middle

Summary:

Pikesville Middle is a public middle school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 967 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pikesville Middle stands out from nearby schools in several ways. It has a significantly higher percentage of White students (14.89%) compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have a majority African American student population. The school's test scores are generally lower than the Baltimore County and Maryland state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with only 7.2% of Pikesville Middle students proficient or better in MCAP/Mathematics, compared to 19.3% in Baltimore County and 24.1% statewide. Pikesville Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past few years, lower than the surrounding schools like Southwest Academy and Katherine Johnson Global Academy. Additionally, Pikesville Middle has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 41.66% to 58.74% over the past few years, and a higher student-teacher ratio (16.1 in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby schools.

The data suggests that Pikesville Middle is an underperforming school within the Baltimore County Public Schools district, with lower test scores, rankings, and ratings compared to the surrounding schools. The school's unique racial makeup, high free/reduced lunch rates, and higher student-teacher ratio may be contributing factors to its academic challenges. Addressing these issues and implementing targeted interventions could be crucial for improving student outcomes at Pikesville Middle.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote i go to this school currently and its not the best/amazing school people are talking about. Our school does not have the money to do anything for us 8th graders this year... they blame it on our behavior but its really because the schools broke, they don't care, and they dont have a good school system... our principle is rarely involved with us at all .... yes we have had a few fights this year but what school doesn't...some of us 8th grade students want to remember our 8th grade year to have been fun and exciting but that looks like its not gong to happen .... Our school is so unorganized that it took me over a month to get my devise(computer) and about a month as well just to get a bus. finally overall don't/ never enroll your kids into this school because they DON'T CARE Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
