Grange Elementary

Summary:

Grange Elementary is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 483 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Grange Elementary stands out for its higher percentage of White students (52.38%) compared to nearby schools, which have more diverse student populations. However, the school's test scores are generally lower than the Baltimore County Public Schools and Maryland state averages, with proficiency rates in Mathematics (15.6%) and English Language Arts (35.5%) significantly below the district and state. Additionally, Grange Elementary's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with the school ranking much lower for its White and multi-racial students compared to its Hispanic students.

Grange Elementary's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 55.29% to 68.53% over the past three school years, suggests a relatively high proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. This, coupled with the school's declining statewide ranking and lower performance compared to nearby schools like Charlesmont Elementary and Logan Elementary, indicates that the school may benefit from targeted interventions and support to address these areas of concern and improve student learning outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote One thing that your statistics and comparisons don't take into account is how well-integrated into the neighborhood a school is. All of our daughter's teachers have lived within a mile of the school. We'll run into one another in the supermarket, walking the dog in the park, at the parade during the summer, cleaning up after natural disasters. It is too bad that good citizenship and sense of community responsibility cannot be measured by MSA tests, because those would shoot Grange up by several stars. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
