Franklin Middle

Summary:

Franklin Middle is a public middle school located in Reisterstown, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,153 students. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Franklin Middle has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more balanced than nearby schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of African American students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 6% of Franklin Middle students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 19.3% in the Baltimore County Public Schools district and 24.1% statewide. The school's performance also varies across different student subgroups, with special education students performing particularly poorly. Additionally, Franklin Middle has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 40.02% in 2021-2022 to 62.19% in 2022-2023, which is higher than nearby schools.

Compared to nearby middle schools, such as Oklahoma Road Middle and Sykesville Middle, both in the Carroll County Public Schools district, Franklin Middle generally performs worse on academic measures, including MCAP test scores and statewide rankings. The school's declining statewide ranking, from 139th out of 314 Maryland middle schools in 2015-2016 to 238th out of 328 in 2023-2024, suggests that its performance has not kept pace with other middle schools in the state.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The growth in Reisterstown is here. Franklin Middle School has double the students than other middle schools in the county. It's filled by it's nearby four elementary schools afterwards they'll sent to Franklin High School.
I can't image any more additions to either Franklin schools, due to limited building space. This area along with the middle and high school is facing a huge problem in the next ten years. Meanwhile, developers keep building more townhouses, condos. and homes in this busting community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
