Deep Creek Middle

Summary:

Deep Creek Middle is a public magnet middle school in Baltimore, Maryland that serves grades 6-8 with a student population of 752. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Deep Creek Middle faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. It has a much higher percentage of African American students (59.84%) than surrounding schools, which range from 9.63% to 46.22% African American. The school also consistently underperforms the Baltimore County and Maryland averages on MCAP assessments, with only 6.2% of 6th graders proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics compared to 15% for Baltimore County and 19.8% for Maryland. Additionally, Deep Creek Middle has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 61.74% to 80.82%, significantly higher than the 54.19% to 69.53% range of nearby schools. As a result, Deep Creek Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Maryland middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years, well below the 2-3 star ratings of nearby schools like Parkville Middle and Crossroads Center.

These findings suggest that Deep Creek Middle faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, likely exacerbated by the high poverty levels and racial disparities within the student population. Addressing these issues will require a targeted approach that considers the unique needs of the school's community and the broader educational landscape within the Baltimore County Public Schools district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We chose this school as a magnet middle school for my child to attend. Of course at the orientation for enrollment/testing this school seemed great. We were told about so many different projects the magnet students would be doing and so forth. This school has been an ABSOLUTE disappointment. The staff is TERRIBLE!! This is truly a problem school. We have been to several meetings at our own request with the administrative staff to express our concerns. We were promised certain things at those meetings which were never received. The teachers are an absolute disgrace and the administrative staff are worse. I would NOT send my child to this school if I were a parent looking into magnet schools for my child to attend. I only wish that upon my search for a good magnet school for my child other parents would have posted their thoughts about this school so we could have enrolled my child somewhere else. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
