Deep Creek Elementary

Summary:

Deep Creek Elementary is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 417 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in the state.

Deep Creek Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 20% of Maryland elementary schools. The school's performance on state assessments is well below the Baltimore County and Maryland state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 9.6% of Deep Creek students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 19.3% in Baltimore County and 24.1% statewide. The school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 80.34% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to these academic struggles.

Compared to nearby schools in the Baltimore County Public Schools district, such as Hawthorne Elementary, Orems Elementary, and Martin Boulevard Elementary, Deep Creek Elementary's academic performance is significantly lower. These nearby schools, while still below state averages, generally perform better on state assessments. To improve the performance of Deep Creek Elementary, the school and district may need to explore strategies such as implementing more intensive academic support, providing targeted professional development for teachers, and addressing the social and emotional needs of students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students are awful and abusive to other children, Horrible school. My 6 yr. old Daughter has been Punched, Pushed , Choked, and slapped across the face and her butt. And this started in kindergarten. The Principle or vice principle have done nothing to help make this kids feel safe in the class room. Nor have they removed the problem kids from the class rooms. I feel bad for these teacher who have no support from the board or the Principle or vice principle. Close Quote

Open Quote I’ve never seen a Bmore County school this bad before. Embarrassment to the rest of the county. Feels like a penitentiary instead of a place for learning.
Principals are clueless and let the kids run the show. Close Quote

Open Quote There is no PTA at this school. Conferences can only be scheduled at useless times (8:00am, 3:30pm, 3:45pm and 4:00pm). Again I say these times are useless to parents that work during the day (who can afford to take off of work). Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
