Carney Elementary

Summary:

Carney Elementary is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 522 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, which is ranked 17th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Carney Elementary has a diverse student population, with 56.9% African American, 25.29% White, 6.7% Asian, and 5.56% Hispanic students. However, the school's test scores, particularly in mathematics, are lower than the district and state averages. For example, only 18.8% of Carney students were proficient or better in MCAP/Mathematics, compared to 19.3% for the Baltimore County Public Schools district and 24.1% for the state of Maryland. Carney also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.55% to 65.52% over the past three school years, which is higher than nearby schools like Villa Cresta Elementary and Perry Hall Elementary.

Carney Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 289 out of 867 Maryland elementary schools in the 2013-2014 school year to a ranking of 549 out of 859 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. This suggests that the school's performance has not kept pace with other schools in the state, particularly in the areas of mathematics and subgroup performance. Compared to nearby schools, Carney Elementary's performance is generally lower, indicating that the school may have room for improvement in certain areas.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Carney Elementary School is focused on student achievement but focuses on the individual sutdents. Monthly grade level meeeting address the needs of each student by name. Teachers use many forms of data and personal observation to assess these needs. No student is pigeon-holed into a specific group or category but movement is fluid depending on the needs of each child. As a former member of the faculty, it was my honor to work with such a group of dedicated and caring individuals. (Believe me, I would tell you if I felt differently.) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
