Baltimore International Academy

Summary:

Baltimore International Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 706 students in grades K-8 in Baltimore, Maryland. The school is located in the Baltimore City Public Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 25 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Baltimore International Academy faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments (MCAP) is below the Baltimore City and Maryland state averages across most grade levels and subject areas, particularly for its African American and low socioeconomic status student subgroups. Despite spending a relatively high amount per student, ranging from $12,526 to $15,525 over the past 3 years, the school's academic outcomes do not appear to be improving. Interestingly, while Baltimore International Academy struggles academically compared to the state, it performs better than some of the other nearby schools in the Baltimore City district, such as Hazelwood Elementary/Middle and Furley Elementary, which also have low academic rankings and test scores.

One notable aspect of Baltimore International Academy is its racial diversity, with a significantly higher percentage of African American (82.29%) and Hispanic (9.77%) students compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 48.94% to 93.68% African American. The school also has a small but notable population of white and multiracial students, which is not the case for some of the other schools in the area. However, this diversity does not appear to translate into improved academic outcomes, as the school's performance on state assessments remains consistently low, particularly for its disadvantaged student subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school offers excellent opportunity to Baltimore City Schools children. With the opportunity to become bilingual and bi-literate as well have become internationally minded through the International Baccalaureate Programme, they are being positioned to be successful in life and career. My son has been at BIA since Kindergarten and he graduates this year (2016). He is fluent in his target language. The adults at this school have high expectation for the students. Close Quote

Open Quote My son enjoys this school. His reading and math skills have improved. The teachers really work with the students, and the teachers always communicate with the parents about the progress of the student. Every school is not perfect, but this school really proves that they work hard at every effort to protect, communicate, and provide for the students. Close Quote

Open Quote There are 2 thing I do like about the school: it is a safer environment then an average city school, and the children do get exposure to a foreign language at an early age. However, the teachers that are often from foreign countries are not well trained in US methods of education, or even the content subjects they are trying to teach. So, if you want your child to sing and dance to a foreign tune through elementary and middle school, they will do just that. But do not expect them to be academically challenged and be well prepared for high school. If you do chose for your child to attend there past early elementary age, be sure you stay on top of their academic performance, and seek independent testing/ assessments to make sure they know what they are expected for their age. My child is in middle school now, and was passed from grade to grade, only to discover that at the moment they are 3 and 4 years behind in math and English! The school wants to "look good" for their annual assessments, and the kids are paying the price. Parents, be aware! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
