The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary

Summary:

The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 196 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Baltimore City Public Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 25 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 96.43% African American and a very high percentage (89.8%) of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating high levels of economic disadvantage. The school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Maryland, with proficiency rates in MCAP Mathematics and English Language Arts well below the state and district averages. Despite relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $18,983 to $21,578 over the past three years, the school's academic performance remains poor, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be enough to drive meaningful improvements.

In contrast, nearby schools like Midtown Academy, Mount Royal Elementary/Middle, and Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School demonstrate that higher levels of academic achievement are possible within the same district. Understanding the factors that contribute to their relative success could provide valuable insights for improving the Historic Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary and addressing the persistent racial disparities and challenges faced by students from low-income backgrounds.

Open Quote This school is horrible. Don’t send your kids here if you care about their wellbeing and their education. You will not get it here. They have teachers there who are not certified. The students there are terrible and nothing is done the principal Ms. Adams is unprofessional. The staff yell and scream at the students like they don’t have training on how to effectively lead the students. They hardly ever see altercations amd when they do they don’t let the parents know. My kids were only here for a year and I hated it. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
