Garrett Heights Elementary/Middle

Summary:

Garrett Heights Elementary/Middle is a public school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 337 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Baltimore City Public Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Garrett Heights faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 20% of Maryland elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 8.3% of students proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 24.1% statewide and 10.2% in Baltimore City Public Schools. The school's student population is predominantly African American (87.24%) and low-income, with 67.3% to 69.89% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

While Garrett Heights spends more per student ($15,552 to $16,199) than nearby schools like Glenmount Elementary/Middle, Leith Walk Elementary/Middle, and The Green School of Baltimore, these schools generally perform better academically. This suggests that funding alone may not be the primary driver of student outcomes at Garrett Heights, and the school may face additional challenges in serving its high-needs student population.

Open Quote Garrett Heights has changed so much in two years. I joined the PTA during the 2016-2017 school year, and since then, the school has gotten completely new leadership. It is transformed! My child will definitely be returning for the 2019-2020 school year. Sadly, the test scores are low because of weak leadership and low expectations over the years, but I have full confidence in the new principal and other school leaders that I have gotten to know. They are professional, passionate, and loving people who have already shown tremendous commitment to the school. I am excited to be part of this school community! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
