Allegany High

Summary:

Allegany High is a public high school located in Cumberland, Maryland, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 684 as of the 2022-2023 school year. While the school generally performs better than the Allegany County Public Schools district and the state of Maryland in English Language Arts assessments, it lags behind in Mathematics and End-of-Course Algebra and Geometry assessments.

Allegany High has a significantly higher percentage of white students (81.14%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 83.38% to 94.46% white students. The school also has a higher percentage of students identifying as two or more races (8.77%) compared to the other schools. Additionally, Allegany High has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 36.36% to 53.51% over the past three school years, which is higher than the surrounding schools, such as Mountain Ridge High School and Fort Hill High.

Allegany High's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, but it has generally trended downward, from a high of 23 out of 32 Maryland high schools in 2020-2021 to a low of 103 out of 146 in 2023-2024. This suggests the school may be struggling to keep pace with other high schools in the state, including the nearby Mountain Ridge High School and the Center for Career & Technical Education, which have higher test scores and statewide rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Having several children pass through Allegany High School, I have found the dedication of the staff and facualty to be outstanding. There are a broad range of AP classes to choose from and my children have been well prepared for college. I had my children in a private school, but removed them for the advanced teaching offered at Allegany. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
