Salisbury Elementary

Summary:

Salisbury Elementary is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in Salisbury, MA, with around 420 students. While the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending than the state average, it consistently ranks in the bottom half of Massachusetts elementary schools in academic performance.

Salisbury Elementary's proficiency rates on MCAS Next Generation assessments are generally below the state and Triton district averages across all grades and subjects, particularly in 6th grade ELA where only 16.33% of students were proficient in 2023-2024, compared to 39.68% statewide. The school's performance also lags behind nearby schools like Pine Grove and Newbury Elementary, which are also part of the Triton district but consistently outperform Salisbury on MCAS assessments. Schools in the neighboring Pentucket and Newburyport districts, such as Dr. John C. Page School and Francis T. Bresnahan Elementary, also significantly outperform Salisbury Elementary.

However, Salisbury Elementary has shown strengths in supporting its homeless student population, ranking in the top 3-5 schools in the state for this subgroup in recent years. The school has also seen a gradual decrease in its White student population, from 83.57% in 2020-2021 to 81.19% in 2022-2023, with corresponding increases in Hispanic and students of two or more races. Overall, Salisbury Elementary faces challenges in academic achievement, particularly in ELA and for its White and special education student subgroups, and the school needs to identify and address the root causes of its underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The principal is a jerk. Special education is like pulling teeth. Moved out of district completely after finding out about their lawsuit in special education and the bad experience we've had with it. Had to involve a lawyer/advocate just to get through. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
