Amigos School

Summary:

Amigos School is a public elementary school in Cambridge, MA that serves students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has consistently ranked among the top 15% of Massachusetts elementary schools, outperforming the Cambridge district and the state in academic assessments.

Amigos School's academic performance is particularly strong, with 63.87% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 62.18% proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 55.2% and 53.81% in the Cambridge district, respectively. The school's Hispanic and White students rank among the top 5% and 3% of Massachusetts elementary schools, respectively. However, the school's performance for special education and low socioeconomic status students is more mixed, suggesting a need to address the needs of these subgroups.

The school's success may be attributed to its high per-student spending of $29,062 and low student-teacher ratio of 10.6, which provide more individualized attention and support for students. Additionally, the school's dual-language immersion program, teaching in both English and Spanish, may contribute to the success of its Hispanic students. Amigos School's consistent high performance and unique strategies make it a model for other schools in the region, offering insights into effective ways to support the academic achievement of diverse student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Strong, supportive school environment and engaged parent community. The dual-language environment has been a wonderful experience for our child. As we already speak Spanish and English with our kids, the Amigos school was actually one of the reasons we moved to Cambridge, and fortunately the lottery worked in our favor. Great experience so far. Facilities could be nicer, but it is a public school after all and the kids could care less! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
