Community Academy of Science and Health

Summary:

Community Academy of Science and Health is a public high school located in Dorchester, MA, serving 347 students in grades 9-12. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 1.73% White, 55.62% African American, 32.85% Hispanic, and 5.48% Asian.

Despite its diverse student body, Community Academy of Science and Health has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Massachusetts high schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from School Digger. The school's four-year graduation rate has declined from 69.2% in 2018-2019 to 60.9% in 2022-2023, well below the state average. Additionally, the school's dropout rate has fluctuated between 8-20% over the past five years, significantly higher than the state average. On the MCAS Next Generation assessments, Community Academy of Science and Health students perform significantly below the state and Boston district averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science.

In comparison, the nearby Boston Latin Academy, a highly selective public school, significantly outperforms Community Academy of Science and Health across all academic metrics, including test scores, graduation rates, and statewide rankings. Other nearby schools, such as Dearborn 6-12 STEM Academy and TechBoston Academy, also demonstrate stronger academic performance compared to Community Academy of Science and Health. While the school's low performance may be influenced by its high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the school's relatively strong performance for English Language Learner students suggests that targeted, specialized support and instructional approaches may be effective in improving outcomes for other student subgroups as well.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote community academy of science is not a good school to let your child participate in because the school doesn't give the students th classes they need, they dont care about the students they care more about money, that's why the created something called uniform, to get money.now they're changing the uniform.if they made it, why do they have to change it? it's a waste of money. from my point of view, it's the worst school in Boston. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
