Condon K-8 School

Summary:

Condon K-8 School is a public elementary school in South Boston, MA that serves students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has faced significant challenges in providing a high-quality education, as evidenced by its consistently low academic performance and statewide ranking.

Condon K-8 School's academic performance is well below the Boston and Massachusetts averages on MCAS Next Generation assessments in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 10.77% of Condon K-8 students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 26.91% in Boston and 39.17% statewide. Similarly, only 7.98% of Condon K-8 students were proficient or better in Math, compared to 26.39% in Boston and 40.91% statewide. This poor academic performance has resulted in Condon K-8 School consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Massachusetts elementary schools, placing it among the lowest-performing schools in the state.

Condon K-8 School's challenges are further highlighted by its high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 9.4 to 11.4 students per teacher in recent years, which is higher than the ratios at many nearby schools, such as Tynan Elementary, Quincy Elementary, and Hurley K-8 School, which have higher proficiency rates and statewide rankings. Addressing the school's challenges will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on improving instructional quality, resource allocation, and student support services.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Bullying in this school is beyond !!!!! The disrespect that some of the teachers display onto students tells the story why students are disrespectful in return. They absolutely need surveillance cameras in every classroom and all corridors because there are teachers and paras in that school that don't deserve to be there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
