Boston Latin School

Summary:

Boston Latin School is a highly prestigious public high school serving grades 7-12 with a student population of 2,423 in Boston, Massachusetts. This school has consistently ranked among the top high schools in the state, known for its rigorous academic curriculum and strong performance on standardized tests.

Boston Latin School students significantly outperform the Boston district and state averages on MCAS Next Generation assessments, with 95.64% of 10th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts in 2023-2024, compared to 42.12% in Boston and 56.86% statewide. The school's graduation rate is exceptionally high at 98.3% in 2022-2023, and its dropout rate is very low at 0.7%, both significantly better than the district and state averages. Boston Latin School's diverse student population includes 38.05% White, 12.22% African American, 15.19% Hispanic, and 29.05% Asian students, and the school's performance is consistently strong across all racial/ethnic subgroups.

Compared to nearby schools like Fenway High School, Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, and O'Bryant School of Math & Science, Boston Latin School's academic performance and rankings are significantly higher, highlighting the stark achievement gap between this school and the surrounding district schools. While Boston Latin School's exceptional results suggest it is effectively serving a diverse student population, the overall disparity in educational outcomes raises questions about equity and access to high-quality education in the Boston area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote BLS does not value creativity or individuality. It's students are taught to conform to outdated status quo and all that is valued by teachers are test scores. This school's educational philosophy is demeaning at best, why torture your child? There is nothing worse than a school that does not value its students' individual learning styles and unique abilities, but BLS also lacks an understanding of the need for children to develop wholly. If you value community, diversity, family, the arts, your child's sense of self-value, or any aspect of education that aims to do more than qualify your child based on his or her test scores, do not send your child here! Open Quote Having graduated over ten years ago, I still find that Latin has the most challenging and caring teachers in Eastern Massachusetts. They never administered open book exams or study guides that resembled actual tests when I was there. Every student is expected to perform well or get kicked out of here. Now that I live in Milton, the supposed second town in the US to live, my middle-schooler gets lots of slack, namely open book exams for science and math and those study guides that become the actual tests. What?! If only Latin school philosophy can get carried to these teachers here........ That's why Latin is ranked in first place almost yearly. Go Wolfpack. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
