Lawtell Elementary School

Summary:

Lawtell Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Lawtell, Louisiana, with a student population of 646. The school is part of the St. Landry Parish school district, which is ranked 47 out of 122 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating. However, Lawtell Elementary has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Louisiana elementary schools, receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

One of the key factors that differentiates Lawtell Elementary is its racial makeup, with a significantly higher percentage of African American students (over 60%) compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have a more balanced racial composition. This demographic difference is reflected in the school's academic performance, as Lawtell Elementary consistently underperforms the state and district averages on LEAP assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 35% of Lawtell students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 59% statewide and 51% in the district. The school's African American and low-socioeconomic status student subgroups perform particularly poorly, ranking in the bottom half of Louisiana elementary schools in these categories.

Lawtell Elementary also faces challenges related to its high percentage of students (over 70%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Additionally, the school has a relatively high student-teacher ratio of 21.5, which is higher than the surrounding schools and the state average. These factors, combined with the school's declining performance over the past decade, suggest a need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of the Lawtell Elementary student population. While the nearby schools in the St. Landry Parish district also struggle academically, Lawtell Elementary consistently performs worse than these schools, indicating that the challenges faced by the school may be more pronounced.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote In one year, they have managed to change my child's attitude from loving school to hating to go. They have a bullying problem, and the kid who complains gets punishment. They sent the bully's parent to our house to speak to me. Luckily, we were on the same page, but it could have ended badly since she was armed with a handgun. My child complains that she can't pay attention on tests because the teacher leaves the room at that time and the kids get noisy. Every bit of the homework seemed to be standardized test preparation. The kid's reading skills seemed to get worse over the course of this year. They could be a tad more professional over there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
