South Fork Elementary School

Summary:

South Fork Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Denham Springs, Louisiana, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 684 students. The school is part of the Livingston Parish school district, which is ranked 18 out of 122 districts in Louisiana and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

South Fork Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to some nearby schools, with a racial breakdown of 52.34% White, 29.68% African American, and 11.84% Hispanic. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by LEAP test scores, is generally lower than the Livingston Parish and Louisiana state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Mathematics (52%) and English Language Arts (68%) were below the Livingston Parish averages (69% and 79%, respectively) and the state averages (59% and 69%, respectively). Additionally, South Fork Elementary's statewide ranking and SchoolDigger star rating have fluctuated over the years, ranging from a high of 113 out of 777 Louisiana elementary schools (4 stars) in 2013-2014 to a low of 379 out of 675 (2 stars) in the current 2023-2024 school year.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at South Fork Elementary, nearly 80% in the 2022-2023 school year, suggests that the school may be serving a population with significant socioeconomic challenges. This could be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance compared to nearby schools like Seventh Ward Elementary (54% free/reduced lunch) and Juban Parc Elementary (62% free/reduced lunch). Additionally, the disparities in LEAP test performance between different racial subgroups at South Fork Elementary, particularly the lower performance of White students compared to African American and Hispanic students, indicate the presence of achievement gaps that need to be addressed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has been going to this school since kindergarten. He has never got student of the week, month or year. He is not allowed to go to the bathroom when he needs to. He has had multiple accidents because they will not allow him to go to the restroom. this year he wore his costume for Halloween on Thursday for red ribbon week and was not allowed to wear his costume for "Trunk or Treat" or the costume contest. He is not allowed to go on field trips because we are unable to afford the school supply fee. I wish they would just go back to having a supply list. I feel like this school has some sore of vendetta against my child for some reason. One morning my child was not allowed to go to the restroom and he had an accident and they called me to bring him some more clothes and he said he was not allowed to go to the restroom. The woman in the office said he never asked. My child will not just say he needs to go to the restroom if he does not need to go. He was bullied at school this year and they waited until the end of the day to even call me Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
