Jefferson RISE Charter School

Summary:

Jefferson RISE Charter School is a public charter high school serving grades 6-12 in Harvey, Louisiana, which is part of the Jefferson Parish school district. The school has a diverse student population, with a mix of White, African American, and Hispanic students.

While Jefferson RISE has a unique student body, its academic performance has been inconsistent and generally lower than the state and district averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Math (42%) and English Language Arts (67%) fell below the Jefferson Parish (49% and 61%) and Louisiana (59% and 69%) averages. The school's ranking has fluctuated, from 209th out of 321 high schools in 2022-2023 to 248th out of 326 in 2021-2022, and it has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, which is below the state average. Additionally, the school's student-teacher ratio has varied widely, from 12.1 to 36.3, which is higher than nearby schools like Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies.

One of the most notable findings is the significant disparity in performance between different student subgroups at Jefferson RISE. While the school ranks highly for Hispanic (3rd out of 113 schools) and English Language Learner (6th out of 50) students, it ranks much lower for White (196th out of 248) and Special Education (67th out of 165) students. This suggests a need for more equitable and differentiated support. Additionally, the school's high percentage of students (78.91%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch indicates that socioeconomic factors may be contributing to the academic challenges faced by the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Jefferson Rise has been damaging for me in so many ways. I don't feel like a have a voice and I don't really feel cared about in this system. Me and other students have had a problem with a racist student who uses the n-word and attends this school, and her mom who just so happen to work there. Not a day goes by that I don't feel stressed at this school. The curriculum is horrible and I don't feel like I'm learning. Just being overloaded with work and homework. I can't wait to leave. Open Quote I feel Jefferson rise takes away too much freedom of character, and rights as a person a a child. It not like any other school at all, very similar to a elementary school, no schedules or periods, lunch is horrible. If you put your child there expecting a normal middle school experience let that go! I wish I would have never spent my middle school years hear. It’s easy to get in in trouble for literally nothing !! They will write you up, suspend you, do anything with out any care wheather you deserved it or not. Close Quote

Open Quote Jefferson RISE provides quality instruction to a diverse body of students from the community. Academics are rigorous and students are pushed hard to learn and be the best person they can be. Expectations are high and results from students are pretty incredible! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
