Riverside Elementary School

Summary:

Riverside Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 458 students in grades PK-5 in Shreveport, Louisiana, which is part of the Caddo Parish school district. While the school's student population has become more diverse in recent years, its academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally below the district and state averages, and its statewide ranking has declined over time.

Riverside Elementary's proficiency rates on the LEAP tests in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) for all grades were 59% and 61% respectively in 2023-2024, compared to 49% and 60% for Caddo Parish, and 59% and 69% for the state of Louisiana. The school's statewide ranking among Louisiana elementary schools has dropped from 234 out of 742 in 2015-2016 to 397 out of 675 in 2023-2024, placing it in the bottom half of elementary schools in the state. Riverside's performance also varies significantly by student subgroup, with White students generally outperforming African American students, and the school struggling with its special education and economically disadvantaged populations.

In contrast, nearby South Highlands Elementary Magnet School and Fairfield Magnet School consistently rank among the top elementary schools in Louisiana and have significantly higher academic proficiency rates. Riverside Elementary's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, as well as the overall low performance of the Caddo Parish school district, are likely contributing factors to the school's academic challenges, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I must say, Riverside Elementary has gone downhill. When my child was attending ECE there it was awesome, but something has definitely gone awry at the school because the teachers are leaving. There is talk of being bullied by teachers. Mistreating children in their formative years is inexcusable! I tried email for a conference...no answer. Need to address this issue IMMEDIATELY. Close Quote

Open Quote This is not a great school at all. Some the teachers are mean to the kids. My daughter comes home complaining all the time. My son has broken a bone while attending school. The principal never returns calls. It's horrible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
