Atkins Technology Elementary School

Summary:

Atkins Technology Elementary School is a public elementary school in Shreveport, Louisiana, serving 251 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Caddo Parish school district, which is ranked 90 out of 122 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Atkins Technology Elementary has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Louisiana, with a statewide ranking between 641-728 out of 675-792 schools over the past decade. The school's student population is overwhelmingly African American (over 90%) and economically disadvantaged, with over 90% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Academically, Atkins Technology Elementary underperforms the Caddo Parish and Louisiana state averages on LEAP assessments in both Mathematics and English Language Arts across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 31% of Atkins students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 49% in Caddo Parish and 59% statewide.

In contrast, nearby schools such as South Highlands Elementary Magnet School and Eden Gardens Fundamental Elementary School have significantly higher academic achievement, more diverse student populations, and lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students. The combination of Atkins Technology Elementary's high-poverty, predominantly minority student population, low academic performance, and high student-teacher ratio suggests that the school may face significant challenges in improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Atkins is a very good school. This school has some of the most caring and hard working teachers and staff members in Shreveport. Despite the area that they are located in and what others may think about them they are GREAT! I love this school and the people that are employed there. To those that are helping keep the school going: Mrs. Gladney, Mrs. Everett, Ms. Banks, Mr. French, Ms. Newton, Mrs. Jackson and Ms. Byrd.........I love you all to death and I thank each of you for taking the time out to make sure that our little ones get what they need. I look forward to seeing all of you in the coming school year! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
