Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North

Summary:

Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North is a public magnet middle school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 510 students. The school is part of the Jefferson County school district, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being a magnet school, Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North consistently ranks among the lowest-performing middle schools in Kentucky, ranking 322nd out of 324 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. The school's academic performance is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates ranging from 4% to 18% in core subjects like mathematics, reading, and science. This is in stark contrast to other high-performing magnet schools in the district, such as Noe Middle and Meyzeek Middle, which consistently rank among the top middle schools in Kentucky with proficiency rates of 50-66% in mathematics and 54-66% in reading.

The school's challenges appear to be multifaceted, involving factors such as socioeconomic status, funding, and the ability to effectively serve diverse student populations. Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 74.51% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the district average. Additionally, the school's lack of improvement over time, despite being a magnet school, raises concerns about the school's ability to address the needs of its diverse learners, including male students, Asian students, African American students, and students with disabilities.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has been at this school for two years. We chose this school based on the teacher interactions we had at the Showcase of Schools and we have NOT been disappointed. The teachers, administrators, and staff at Olmsted Academy North are phenomenal and so passionate about the boys learning in this school. When I have had any concerns about ANYTHING, the teachers and/or principal respond IMMEDIATELY and are very supportive! This school seems to get a bad rap and I think the parents need to step up a little. It starts at home. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
