Cochran Elementary

Summary:

Cochran Elementary is a public elementary school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving 324 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Jefferson County School District, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cochran Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Kentucky elementary schools, with a 0 or 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is performing significantly below average. The school struggles academically, with proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies consistently falling well below the Jefferson County and Kentucky state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Cochran Elementary's 3rd-grade mathematics proficiency rate was just 12%, compared to 31% for the district and 43% for the state.

Interestingly, nearby schools like Audubon Traditional Elementary, a public magnet school, consistently perform better than Cochran Elementary, ranking in the top 30% of Kentucky elementary schools with a 3-4 star rating. This highlights the significant performance gap between Cochran Elementary and some of the higher-performing schools in the same district. Additionally, Cochran Elementary has a high percentage of students from low-income families, which likely contributes to its academic struggles, as research has shown that poverty can be a significant barrier to student achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Cochran is an amazing school with wonderful staff. Principal Foster and Assistant Principal Huber know each student by name, talk to them daily and are completely involved in the process of each class within their school. I feel confident that my child will continue to perform above grade level as a direct result of his attendance at Cochran Elementary! Close Quote

Open Quote We have three children currently in this school. It is such a supportive atmosphere, the staff is always involved and Principal Foster makes an effort to know each student by name. They have worked tirelessly to get access to grants and materials the majority of their students are without. Within the past two years, they have begun placing a huge emphasis on math and reading and test scores are beginning to show that effort. UofL just began a teaching school there, so there are always an abundance of student teachers within the building, making the student to teacher ratio much smaller than it looks like on paper. They embrace diversity and cultural differences in a way very few schools in this district do. I truthfully could not rave about Cochran enough. We are blessed to have our children attend such a wonderful school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
