Carrithers Middle

Summary:

Carrithers Middle is a public middle school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving 583 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Jefferson County school district, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Carrithers Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Kentucky middle schools, with a ranking between 233 and 308 over the past 10 years, and a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Carrithers Middle consistently underperforms compared to the Jefferson County and Kentucky state averages across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 13% (6th grade) to 22% (7th grade), compared to 27-42% for the district and state. Similarly, in Reading, the proficiency rates ranged from 21% (8th grade) to 32% (7th grade), compared to 28-49% for the district and state. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, with particularly low rankings for African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students.

When comparing Carrithers Middle to nearby schools in the Jefferson County district, it becomes clear that the school is underperforming compared to its peers. For example, Barret Traditional Middle and Crosby Middle, both located within 8 miles of Carrithers, significantly outperform Carrithers across all academic measures, with proficiency rates that are often double or triple those of Carrithers. Despite consistent funding and resources, Carrithers Middle has not shown significant improvement in its academic performance or school ranking over the past 10 years, suggesting the need for a comprehensive, targeted approach to address the unique challenges faced by high-poverty schools and support the academic success of all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A lot of the teachers aren't good.
There too many kids per class. (Over 30)
The lunch food tasted terrible.
Many students had bad behavior.
The academics were not challenging.
The school is dirty, especially the bathrooms.
The only good thing about this school for me was all the good friendships I made.
Thank god I'm going to a really good high school now and I don't have to deal with this bad stuff anymore. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
