Chenoweth Elementary

Summary:

Chenoweth Elementary is a public elementary school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving 467 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Jefferson County school district, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Chenoweth Elementary has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past few years, dropping from a high of 87th out of 705 Kentucky elementary schools in 2013-2014 to its current ranking of 413th out of 685 schools in 2023-2024. The school's student performance on the Kentucky State Assessments is generally below the Jefferson County and statewide averages across various subjects and grade levels, particularly in the areas of Science, Writing, and Social Studies. Chenoweth's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White students performing better than their African American and students with disabilities peers, indicating significant achievement gaps.

While Chenoweth Elementary's per-student spending is relatively high, the school's student-teacher ratio is on the higher end, which may impact the level of individual attention and support available to students. Interestingly, Chenoweth's performance is generally lower than that of nearby schools, such as Greathouse/Shryock Traditional, Bloom Elementary, and Dunn Elementary, which all rank significantly higher in the state and have stronger student outcomes. Addressing the observed achievement gaps and improving overall student performance should be a priority for Chenoweth Elementary and the Jefferson County school district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We sent three children through Chenoweth until we moved away from Louisville. I cannot say enough about the quality experience we had there. Our family adored the Principal, Penny Dietrich and the school counsellor was so helpful when one of our children needed support. The outdoor science classroom is amazing and to this day our children are science geeks. I am convinced Chenoweth instilled that love of hands-on science learning in them. The teachers were caring and professional. Mr Henry was an especially exceptional ray of light in our lives. Our children still talk about the teachers they had a Chenoweth and the life lessons as well as the academic ones they learned from them. No school is perfect but this one is as close as it gets in our family's book. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
