Valley High

Summary:

Valley High is a public high school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving 964 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Jefferson County School District, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Valley High has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Kentucky high schools over the past decade, with a current ranking of 258 out of 290 schools for the 2023-2024 school year.

The data reveals that Valley High significantly underperforms compared to the Jefferson County and statewide averages on standardized tests, with only 18% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in ACT English, 11% in mathematics, and 18% in reading. The school also struggles with lower graduation rates, at 89.4%, compared to nearby magnet schools like Louisville Male High (98.1%) and duPont Manual High (98.9%). Additionally, Valley High has a high percentage of students from low-income families, with 69.92% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the nearby magnet schools.

The data suggests that Valley High has been a consistently low-performing school, with significant achievement gaps for African American, Hispanic, and low-income students. While the school has higher per-student spending compared to some of the nearby magnet schools, this funding alone does not seem to be driving academic success. Addressing the underlying challenges and implementing targeted interventions will be crucial for Valley High to improve its outcomes and provide a high-quality education for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Valley is a very good School, test scores are not always the best indicator. Many of our Schools are struggling and Valley is no different. But they have quality people that care about students, and work very hard. The District has invested millions updating technology labs, computer labs, classroom smart-boards in every room. Valley is a quality school where students can receive a good education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
