Hamilton Middle School

Summary:

Hamilton Middle School is a public middle school in Wichita, Kansas, serving 566 students in grades 6-8. Unfortunately, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Kansas middle schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

The school faces significant academic challenges, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science that are far below the state and district averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 5.9% of students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 19.95% in the Wichita district and 33.55% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low in 8th grade, with only 2.74% proficient or better in ELA and 1.09% in Mathematics. The school also struggles to effectively serve its diverse student population, with low proficiency rates across all subgroups, including African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students.

Interestingly, the school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds (96.47% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and its relatively high per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio do not appear to have translated into improved academic outcomes. This suggests that simply increasing resources may not be enough to address the school's underlying issues. A comprehensive school improvement plan that addresses instructional practices, curriculum, professional development, and targeted interventions for struggling students may be necessary to drive meaningful and sustainable progress at Hamilton Middle School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Some of the personnel in the office seem to have a God complex. They seem to think that they can boss everyone around and make the students do as they see fit even directly in front of the parent who is telling the child differently. Someone needs to get in there and do some evaluations and maybe secretly watch how the so called adults in that school act with the children. You do NOT treat a sick child the way the people at that school do. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
