Trailwood Elementary

Summary:

Trailwood Elementary is a public elementary school located in Overland Park, Kansas, serving grades PK-6 with a student population of 444. It is part of the Shawnee Mission Public School District, which is ranked 46 out of 266 districts in Kansas and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Trailwood Elementary has consistently been one of the top-performing elementary schools in Kansas, ranking within the top 5% of all Kansas elementary schools for the past several years. In the 2023-2024 school year, Trailwood Elementary ranked 31st out of 653 Kansas elementary schools and received a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance is particularly strong, with 65.29% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 66.38% proficient or better in Mathematics, significantly outperforming the Shawnee Mission Public School District and the state of Kansas. Trailwood's performance is especially impressive in 4th grade, where 82.69% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts and 82.34% were proficient or better in Mathematics.

Trailwood Elementary also stands out for its strong equity and inclusion practices, consistently ranking among the top schools in Kansas for the performance of its female, male, white, and low socioeconomic status student subgroups. However, the school's relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, ranging from 10.22% to 12.39%, suggests that it serves a more affluent student population compared to other schools in the Shawnee Mission district. This raises questions about the potential impact of socioeconomic factors on academic performance and the school's ability to support students from diverse backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote In my opinion Trailwood is a product of environment, not educational excellence. We have two daughters there and it is rather evident that a naturally good student will flourish and a kid who needs even the slightest bit of help will be left to rot.

The reading specialist is great and the teachers in mid career seem to be pretty good. The teachers who are very young tend to leave as soon as they have a child and those near retirement have a busted give a darn. Our oldest had only had one classroom teacher who I would say was a great teacher. The rest were all mediocre at best. Our youngest has had 2 strong teachers but she had a debacle with 3 teachers in the first 10 weeks of school because the original teacher had a baby a week into school and didn't return. The Principal was the only person who didn't know that was going to happen so instead of a plan and having a full time replacement ready, they had a sub for 9 weeks, then a new teacher again. The sub and the new teacher were very good, but this was totally unacceptable to put 2nd graders through.

I would not suggest Trailwood to a friend. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
