Rawlins County Junior/Senior High School

Summary:

Rawlins County Junior/Senior High School is a public high school located in Atwood, Kansas, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 176 students. The school is part of the Rawlins County School District, which is ranked 129 out of 266 districts in Kansas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Rawlins County Junior/Senior High School has shown fluctuating academic performance over the years, with its statewide ranking ranging from 44 (2022-2023) to 300 (2020-2021) out of 320-327 Kansas high schools. The school's performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics was below the state average across most grade levels, but it performed better than the state average in 7th grade ELA and Mathematics, as well as in 11th grade Science. The school has a higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds compared to the state, and its performance for White students, female, and male students has been consistently low.

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending compared to the state average, the fluctuating academic performance suggests that the school may need to examine how its resources are being utilized to support student learning and achievement. Identifying and building upon the school's subject-specific or grade-level strengths, such as its performance in 7th grade ELA and Mathematics and 11th grade Science, could be a valuable strategy to improve overall student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is decent academically. For the last several years, we have experienced bullying. My child no longer reports it, because it is known that nothing will become of it. Sports teams would rather end a game early in a blowout than play second string players. If someone doesn't fit the mold, they will be picked on. My children all love living in this area, but they all wish to find a different school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
