Summary:

Northview Elementary School is a public elementary school in Valparaiso, Indiana, serving 271 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Valparaiso Community Schools district, which is ranked 14th out of 381 districts in Indiana and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Northview Elementary consistently performs well academically, often outperforming the Valparaiso district and state averages on ILEARN assessments. For example, in 2023-2024, 69.39% of Northview's 3rd graders scored proficient or better in ELA, compared to 65.18% for the district and 38.6% for the state. The school has been ranked among the top 20 elementary schools in Indiana and currently places in the top 30% of the state. However, Northview's student population is relatively homogeneous, with over 80% white students, in contrast to some nearby schools like Flint Lake Elementary and Parkview Elementary, which have more diverse student bodies.

While Northview generally outperforms many of its neighbors academically, schools like Heavilin Elementary and Memorial Elementary consistently rank even higher in the state. Additionally, Northview has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 0.8% in 2020-2021 to 11.7% in 2021-2022, which may be an area of concern. The school has also experienced a growing population of economically disadvantaged students, with the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch increasing from 26.36% in 2020-2021 to 37.27% in 2022-2023.

Open Quote So far, our child has seen the following: First-grade teacher overturning students' desks if "contraband" was discovered (like a small car or so)--students were made into an "island" while picking up desk contents in front of all classmates. Second-grade teacher demoted from third grade because of bad iSTEP scores in her previous class and doling out discipline notes like they're candy wrappers. Third-grade teacher completely lost at how to manage a room full of 8 and 9 year olds. Gender-biased discipline in the lunchroom (girls get punished, boys don't). The only good thing about this school are the STEM class and the library teacher. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
