Montezuma Elementary School

Summary:

Montezuma Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in Montezuma, Indiana, with a student population of 232. The school is part of the Southwest Parke Com School Corp district, which is ranked 226 out of 381 districts in Indiana and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Montezuma Elementary School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, with consistently lower ILEARN test scores in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies compared to the state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 23.58% of Montezuma students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 36.43% for the district and 38.6-41.8% statewide. The school also has higher rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 9.9% to 22.7% in recent years, and a high percentage of students (over 60%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher level of economic disadvantage. Despite these challenges, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 9.9 to 12 in recent years, and has seen an increase in per-student spending, from $9,390 in 2018-2019 to $12,392 in 2021-2022.

When compared to the nearby schools, such as Terre Town Elementary School, Rio Grande Elementary School, and Fayette Elementary School, Montezuma Elementary consistently underperforms in academic measures, despite its lower student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending. This suggests that factors beyond just resources and staffing may be contributing to the school's underperformance. Addressing the underlying issues, such as chronic absenteeism and economic disadvantage, could be crucial in improving student outcomes at Montezuma Elementary School.

Open Quote This is the worst school ever. My son is in kindergarten, he has ADHD and ODD. The school doesnt want to take thw time out and work with him and to teach him. They want all kids to fit in the same box of learning. But jot everyone learns the same way. I absolutely hate this school and how the treat parents and students. If you arent a big name in the town they treat you like you are nothing and trash. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
