Seymour Middle School

Summary:

Seymour Middle School is a public middle school serving 1,178 students in grades 6-8 in Seymour, Indiana, which is part of the Seymour Community Schools district. While the district is ranked 241 out of 381 in Indiana and has a 2-star rating, Seymour Middle School faces several challenges that set it apart from nearby middle schools.

Academically, Seymour Middle School lags behind the state and district averages, with only 31.35% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 23.45% proficient in math, compared to state averages of over 40% in both subjects. The school also has a high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 16.3% to 22.3% over the past three years, which is notably higher than the 16.2% rate at Northside Middle School. Additionally, Seymour Middle School serves a significantly higher percentage of students from low-income families, with 56.54% to 70.88% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, compared to 48.89% at Northside Middle School and 46.44% at Brownstown Central Middle School.

When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Central Middle School and Jennings County Middle School, both part of the Bartholomew Con School Corp and Jennings County School Corporation districts, respectively, Seymour Middle School consistently underperforms on standardized tests. This suggests that addressing the school's challenges, such as chronic absenteeism and the socioeconomic factors affecting its student population, could be crucial in improving academic outcomes and providing a more equitable education for all students.

Open Quote Well I would love to hear from a teacher to explain to me WHY when a kid does something wrong does the entire class gets punished. (example: 20 kids in class, 7 kids won"t stop talking, sooooo! the teacher announces that the entire class has extra work.) How does punishing everyone get the point across to the 7.

1. you are teaching children to hate, not just you but also the 7.
2. you teach children that no matter how good they are they are they will still be punished for others actions.
3. you teach children that only when EVERYONE is good will you be rewarded ( and probably not even then ).

BACK IN THE DAY THOSE 7 WOULD BE IN THE (PRINCIPALS) OFFICE WORKING.. NOT LAUGHING BECAUSE EVERYONE IS PAYING FOR THEIR STUPIDITY.

Does anyone else feel this way? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
