Homecroft Elementary School

Summary:

Homecroft Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in the Perry Township Schools district in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a student population of 603. While the school has a diverse student body, with significant Hispanic and Asian representation, its academic performance, as measured by test scores, is generally below the district and state averages.

One of the key challenges facing Homecroft Elementary is its high chronic absenteeism rate, which at 23.2% in the 2022-2023 school year, is significantly higher than the district's 20.3% and the 14.8% rate at nearby schools like William Henry Burkhart Elementary and Southport Elementary. Additionally, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (35.96%) and Math (39.55%) are lower than the district's (38.95% and 37.48%, respectively) and the state's (38.6% and 52.4% for 3rd grade).

Another factor that sets Homecroft Elementary apart is its high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 78.61% in the 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly higher than the district average and nearby schools like Mary Bryan Elementary (71.16%) and Douglas MacArthur Elementary (64.61%). While the school's funding and student-teacher ratio are on par with the district and nearby schools, its academic performance lags behind, indicating a need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

Open Quote Just wanted to give a first-hand account of our experience with Homecroft. We have had all four of our children go there. All have received an excellent education with lots of personalized attention and affirmation from the teachers, administration, and staff.

It disappoints me that this web site give the school a low rating (at this viewing at least) based on an average of standardized test scores. One of the wonderful things about Homecroft is that the school does such a great job of welcoming in students from different cultures that there are quite a few international students who go there. This is part of what we love about the school, but it also means that the average scores are a bit lower - since students from other countries will generally not score as well on those sorts of tests until they are more comfortable with English.

In any case, I know from my older two children that they and their friends from Homecroft have been very well prepared to excel at advance classes as they moved on to the middle school and high school level.

Bottom line - not only will your kids receive an excellent education at Homecroft, but they will also receive lessons in character and good citizenship from a staff who truly cares. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
