Highland Hills Middle School

Summary:

Highland Hills Middle School is a public middle school located in Georgetown, Indiana, serving grades 5-8 with a total enrollment of 1,652 students. The school is part of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School District, which is ranked 91 out of 381 school districts in Indiana and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Highland Hills Middle School consistently ranks among the top middle schools in Indiana, with ILEARN test scores that are significantly higher than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 56.88% of Highland Hills students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 47.31% for the district and 40.3% for the state. However, the school has a predominantly white student population, in contrast to some nearby schools like Hazelwood Middle School and Nathaniel Scribner Middle School, which have more diverse student populations. Additionally, Highland Hills Middle School has a relatively low chronic absenteeism rate and a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch compared to nearby schools like Clarksville Middle School and River Valley Middle School.

These findings suggest that Highland Hills Middle School has been able to maintain a high level of academic performance, likely due to effective teaching practices, a strong curriculum, and a supportive learning environment. However, the school's racial homogeneity and socioeconomic factors raise questions about educational equity and the factors that contribute to these differences between Highland Hills and its neighboring schools within the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School District.

Open Quote this school is hands down the best middle school in Southern Indiana and it's far superior to ANYTHING JCPS has to offer. If you care about your child you'll send them there. I don't need to say much, just look at their test scores. What is not mentioned is that their arts programs are the best in the state (they win every year). Love this school Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
