Morton Senior High School

Summary:

Morton Senior High School is a public high school located in Hammond, Indiana, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,609 students. The school is part of the School City of Hammond district, which is ranked 331 out of 381 districts in Indiana and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Morton Senior High School faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. The school has a much higher percentage of African American (44.25%) and Hispanic (39.47%) students, and consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Indiana high schools in academic performance, with standardized test scores well below state and district averages. Morton's four-year graduation rates have fluctuated between 59.7% and 79.2% in recent years, lower than the 70-90% range of surrounding schools like Griffith Junior/Senior High School, Hammond Central High School, and Munster High School. Additionally, Morton has very high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 12.6% to 35.5% over the past three years, compared to 10-22% at nearby schools.

The challenges at Morton Senior High School may be linked to the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 69.17-74.11% receiving free or reduced-price lunch. This suggests that addressing the underlying socioeconomic and demographic factors could be crucial in improving the school's performance. Despite the school's struggles, its per-student spending is relatively high, indicating that the issue may not be solely a lack of funding, but rather the effective allocation and utilization of resources to meet the unique needs of the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a former student, the education there was subpar. There were exceptional teachers and others that were not suitable to educate. The school needs to raise the MIL a bit to get better facilities to attract quality teachers. I have seen that many more recent graduates are not ready to work as a cahier at a grocery store, let alone ready to be college bound. Come on Hessville, you're better than this!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
