Lindley Elementary School

Summary:

Lindley Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, serving around 300 students in grades PK-5. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 28.67% White, 25.67% African American, 34% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 9.67% two or more races. While Lindley Elementary has been consistently ranked in the bottom half of Indiana elementary schools, with a 2 out of 5 star rating, the school outperforms the Fort Wayne Community Schools district in academic proficiency across all grades and subjects.

One key differentiator for Lindley Elementary is its significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate compared to nearby schools, at 26.9% in the 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly higher than the 15.9% to 28.7% range seen at schools like Waynedale Elementary and Franke Park Elementary. Additionally, Lindley has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 69.33% in 2022-2023, which is higher than most nearby schools. However, the school has seen a steady increase in spending per student, from $10,463 in 2018-2019 to $12,569 in 2021-2022, which is higher than the spending at many nearby schools.

The data suggests that Lindley Elementary faces significant challenges, but also has some strengths that could be leveraged to improve student outcomes. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and providing targeted academic support, while learning from the successes of higher-performing nearby schools, could help Lindley make progress in serving its diverse student population.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
