Gray M Sanborn Elementary School

Summary:

Gray M Sanborn Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 444 students in grades PK-6 in Palatine, Illinois, which is part of the Palatine CCSD 15 district.

The school faces significant challenges in academic performance, particularly in serving its diverse student population. Gray M Sanborn Elementary consistently underperforms the district and state in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency, with only 22.5% of students proficient or better in each subject, compared to 40.2% and 34.5% for the district, and 41.2% and 28.4% for the state. The school struggles to effectively serve its Asian, Hispanic, and White students, as well as English Language Learners and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Chronic absenteeism has also been a persistent issue, with rates ranging from 22.9% to 26.4% over the past 5 years, significantly higher than the state average.

The school's performance has also declined over the past 5 years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 833 out of 1,948 schools in 2020-2021 to 1,260 out of 2,067 schools in 2023-2024, indicating the need for a comprehensive review of its instructional practices and support systems.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the worst school I have ever seen. My 7 year old son had the worst school year and faced lot of bullying and hitting by other kids in the class. I complained about this to the school authorities, and his class teacher said she will look into the matter. Later, I got call from Principle that they have taken action. I was relieved that things will get better for my son, But they didn’t. The hitting continued, bullying and use of bad words continued. My son hated going to school, everyday he comes back home and tells me to change his school. Then the following month, I went again to complain about this, but nothing happened. We have decided to move to other school district, Can’t live in fear and anxiety after sending my son to school everyday. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is not good for children with disabilities. They are disrespected on a constant basis. A disabled child asked to use the bathroom and was told on multiple occasions to deficate in her pull-up, causing great embarrassment and led to bullying by her fellow students. The right to use a toilet is a most basic civil right, and I think the school should lose federal funding as a result, Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
