Kell Grade School

Summary:

Kell Grade School is a small public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the rural community of Kell, Illinois, with a student population of just 83 as of the 2022-2023 school year. While the school has a predominantly White student body, it faces some unique challenges compared to the surrounding schools in the area.

One key area of concern is Kell Grade School's high chronic absenteeism rate, which has risen significantly from 5.6% in 2018-2019 to 16.2% in 2022-2023 - notably higher than the state average of 14.1% and the surrounding schools, which range from 10.3% to 21.0%. Academically, the school also struggles, with lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to state and regional averages. For example, in 2022-2023, only 21.4% of 6th-grade students and 18.2% of 7th-grade students at Kell Grade School were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state averages of 34.2% and 37.9%, respectively. Similarly, in Mathematics, only 14.3% of 6th-grade students and 9.1% of 7th-grade students at Kell Grade School were proficient or better, compared to the state averages of 23.4% and 26.9%.

These academic challenges are reflected in Kell Grade School's overall statewide ranking, which has consistently placed it in the bottom half of Illinois elementary schools, with a ranking of 1029 out of 2082 schools in 2021-2022 and a 3-star rating out of 5. This is lower than the surrounding schools, which generally have higher rankings and ratings. Additionally, Kell Grade School has seen a significant increase in spending per student, from $9,647 in 2019-2020 to $20,168 in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the surrounding schools, which range from $9,497 to $14,290 per student. These factors suggest that Kell Grade School may face unique challenges that require targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes and overall school performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
