West Oak Intermediate School

Summary:

West Oak Intermediate School is a public elementary school serving grades 3-5 in Mundelein, Illinois, part of the Diamond Lake School District 76. With 246 students, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Illinois elementary schools over the past decade, currently at 1507 out of 2067 schools with a 1-star rating.

West Oak Intermediate School significantly underperforms the state and its own district averages in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 20.6% of students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 41.2% statewide and 22.8% in the district. In Mathematics, the school's proficiency rate was just 13.9%, compared to 28.4% statewide and 14.1% in the district. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching 25.6% in 2021-2022, much higher than the state average of 17.6%. With 63.01% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the school has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, which likely contributes to its academic challenges.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Mechanics Grove Elementary School, which is part of a different district, West Oak Intermediate School stands out as a lower-performing outlier. The school's declining performance over the past decade, along with its struggles to serve the needs of specific student subgroups, suggest that addressing the root causes of its challenges will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach by the school, district, and community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This district has undergone an enormous transformation in the past 5 years. The facilities are beautiful, they have a low teacher/student ratio, student growth is above average, teachers have many leadership opportunities and roles and are HAPPY! Don’t let the scores fool you- kids receive a top of the line education at this school. Many kids are first and second generation immigrants which puts them at a disadvantage with standardized tests that are not designed to accurately reflect the knowledge/skills acquisition of these students at this age. Because of it’s diversity, the district offers a uniquely authentic and robust dual language program. This district is a hidden gem. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
