Washington-McKinley Elementary School

Summary:

Washington-McKinley Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 274 students in grades K-5 in Chicago Heights, Illinois, which is part of the Chicago Heights School District 170. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Illinois elementary schools and struggles with low academic performance, high poverty rates, and chronic absenteeism.

Washington-McKinley's academic performance is significantly below state and district averages, with only 26.6% of students proficient or better in ELA and 21.9% in Math, compared to 41.2% and 28.4% statewide, respectively. The school's performance has been declining in recent years. While the school's African American and Hispanic students perform better than the overall student population, students with disabilities and special education students perform significantly worse, ranking in the bottom quarter of Illinois schools.

Interestingly, the nearby schools within the Chicago Heights School District 170 generally perform better than Washington-McKinley, but they also serve high-poverty student populations. The only school outside the district, Steger Primary Center, has a lower percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch and slightly better academic performance than Washington-McKinley. These findings suggest a need for district-wide interventions and support to improve educational outcomes for students in the Chicago Heights area.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
