Sayre Elementary Language Academy

Summary:

Sayre Elementary Language Academy is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 428 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sayre Elementary has struggled with significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching as high as 41.3% in the 2022-2023 school year. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by proficiency rates on state assessments, is well below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 29.2% of Sayre students were proficient in ELA, and 13.8% were proficient in Math, compared to 30.5% and 18.3% for the district, and 41.2% and 28.4% for the state. The school's subgroup performance, particularly for African American, Hispanic, and low-socioeconomic status students, is relatively stronger compared to the overall school performance, but these subgroups still lag behind their peers at the district and state levels.

In contrast, the nearby schools in the Oak Park and River Forest school districts, such as Horace Mann Elementary, William Hatch Elementary, and Willard Elementary, consistently outperform Sayre Elementary and the Chicago Public Schools District on academic measures, with significantly lower chronic absenteeism rates and higher proficiency levels in ELA and Math. The high rates of poverty and the challenges associated with serving a large population of English Language Learners and students with special needs may be contributing factors to the academic struggles at Sayre Elementary and the surrounding schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Some of the underclass teachers are absolutely wonderful. They care about the progress of their students and go above and beyond for them. Having said that, it appears that the "New" Principal has it in her agenda to turn this into an "alternative school for disturbed youth". Why do I say this? My HONOR ROLL STUDENT was not only stabbed with a pencil , but has been tormented by the behavior of a student (this entire year) that should have been gone years ago. What does the principal do? Sends the problem child to a "fun class" for a little bit and leaves her to torture the teachers on a daily basis and disrupt the lessons they are trying to teach. I am all for having children in my childs class that may have a learning disability or other issues, but the child I am referring to has a BEHAVIOR ISSUE and literally is surrounded by people who do not care to discipline her . I STRONGLY encourage everyone who is thinking about putting their child in this school to LIE and get their kids in another district if they can. It is not worth your childs education to have them in a place where the admin wont do a thing to ensure the safety and promote the education of your child. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
