Tanner Elementary School

Summary:

Tanner Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 296 students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Illinois elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Tanner Elementary School faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, very low academic performance, and persistent struggles across multiple student subgroups. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better on the IAR (Illinois Assessment of Readiness) exams, is extremely low across all grade levels and subject areas. In 2023-2024, only 10.1% of all students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 30.5% for the Chicago Public Schools District 299 and 41.2% for the state. In math, the proficiency rates were even lower, with 0% of students proficient or better across all grade levels. The school's performance on the IAR exams is particularly low for African American students and low socioeconomic status students, ranking in the bottom 10% of Illinois elementary schools for these subgroups.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Ruggles Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, and Deneen Elementary School, generally perform better than Tanner Elementary School on academic measures, despite being part of the same Chicago Public Schools District 299. This suggests that factors beyond just district-level policies and resources may be contributing to Tanner's poor performance. Additionally, despite the relatively high spending per student at Tanner Elementary School, the school's academic outcomes remain poor, raising questions about the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Hi, I do not attend Tanner however, I have known the principal since he was in his late teens and I must say that he is a great person one of his best attributes is his compassion. Definitely known by his peers as one always seeking the peaceful resolution, and with the level of popularity he experienced, countless intense situations would have took a turn opposite of peaceful without his intervention or with his approval. I was somewhat moved by a comment a parent made with regard to an incident at the school in April, relating to her child being mistreated while the principal watched. Of course I was not there but I again have known principal Smith for many years and I along with any other individual who knows him question the validity of that comment. Principal Smith is a man of good character and the student as well as the faculty are Blessed that he is the leader there. I would say to the parent who has every right and duty to fight for her child, as a parent of a 12th grader I know and understand how important that is for the all around well being of a child. I really don't think you received a true account of the incident whether it be what happen prior or during. Principal Smith is definitely not a person who would mistreat a child or stand by and allow it, he wouldn't and there are many people who could confirm that. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
