Otis Elementary School

Summary:

Otis Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 317 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Otis Elementary School has consistently been ranked in the bottom 25% of Illinois elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Otis Elementary School is struggling across a range of metrics, including high chronic absenteeism rates, significantly below-average test scores, and poor subgroup performance. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 15.8% of Otis students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 30.5% for the district and 41.2% for the state. In math, only 5.8% of Otis students were proficient or better, compared to 18.3% for the district and 28.4% for the state. The school's performance is also significantly worse than most of the nearby schools in the same district, such as Skinner Elementary School, which had 67.6% of students proficient or better in ELA and 60.3% in math.

Despite relatively high spending per student at $29,732 in 2022-2023, Otis Elementary School's academic outcomes have not improved. The high chronic absenteeism rates and low socioeconomic status of the student population may be contributing factors to the school's poor performance. Targeted interventions and support services may be needed to address these challenges and ensure that Otis students receive a high-quality education and are prepared for success in the future.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This use to be a great school until Mrs. Mendez took over. Our school was at a level 1. I pulled my daughter out of this school and sent her to another level 1 school. She had to catch up because she was so behind. I did appreciate the teachers that tried to make a difference. Also, some of the staff made my daughter to be a bully, but she was the one that got bullied. My daughter is a big girl that didn't cry so they targeted her. At her new school, all the staff loves her especially the principal and she has many friends. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
