Murphy Elementary School

Summary:

Murphy Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 497 students in grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, which is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299.

Murphy Elementary School consistently outperforms the district average in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency, with 35.5% of students proficient or better in ELA and 24.5% in Mathematics, compared to 30.5% and 18.3% for the district, respectively. The school's performance is particularly strong in 4th and 8th grade ELA. While the school has a diverse student population, its White and Hispanic students perform exceptionally well, ranking in the top 25% of Illinois elementary schools in ELA and Mathematics. However, the school's English Language Learner (ELL) and Special Education students have struggled, with lower proficiency rates compared to the district and state.

Compared to nearby schools, Disney II Elementary School and Linne Elementary School have stronger overall academic results, especially in Mathematics. Additionally, Murphy Elementary School has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 8.2% in 2019-2020 to 30.8% in 2023-2024, which is higher than the district average of 30.5%. Despite these challenges, the school's performance, particularly for its White and Hispanic student subgroups, suggests that socioeconomic factors may not be the sole driver of academic outcomes at Murphy.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school fulfills it's mission statement of creating a caring community. The teachers are excellent at imparting knowledge and developing respectful, considerate children. They foster an appreciation of reading and the arts, and have high-quality partnerships with organizations like Ravinia Festival, Old Town School of Folk Music, Girls In The Game, the YMCA, and more. As an educator myself, I would not have my child in Murphy if I was displeased with care and quality of the environment. The websites that show less-than-strong ratings make me sad because they are such misrepresentations of this wonderful school. Close Quote

Open Quote Murphy is such a gem in our community! We chose to send our children here over other offers to magnet and selective enrollment schools and are so happy with our decision. They are both thriving at Murphy due to the strong classroom instruction, myriad field trips, individualized and differentiated teaching methods and a "can-do" attitude. Being a Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster school, the arts are effortlessly integrated into their daily instruction and they also have specials such as dance, drama, visual arts, and music that build on and circle back to their daily experiences. But core subjects like math, reading, social studies and science are still doing amazing things too! There are also after school programs, School Band, Choir, Sports, etc. This year I have been so impressed by my children's teachers. My kindergartener loves school and her class even raised money to have a Skype event with a famous children's book author/illustrator. My 2nd grader's class put on a Whale Museum and a Wax Museum, both of which blew me away. The depth and breadth of subjects that they have been studying is amazing and I can't wait to see what's next. Close Quote

Open Quote Lovely, clean school with lots of free afterschool programs for 3-6 grades. Great teachers. In the early grades (Pre-K -2) there is an emphasis on the Reggio classroom method. Excellent principal and assistanct principal. Choir, band, dance and drama, music and visual arts round out the art curriculum. Active parent community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
