Moos Elementary School

Summary:

Moos Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 433 students. Despite being part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois, Moos Elementary has consistently been ranked in the bottom quarter of Illinois elementary schools over the past decade, receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Moos Elementary School faces significant challenges, including very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 37.1% to 42.8% in recent years, and academic performance that is significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 19.9% of Moos students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 30.5% for the district and 41.2% for the state. In math, only 5.2% of Moos students were proficient or better, compared to 18.3% for the district and 28.4% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with low socioeconomic status.

Interestingly, Moos Elementary School's performance is significantly lower than that of nearby schools, such as Goethe Elementary School, Pulaski International School of Chicago, and Chase Elementary School, which all have higher academic proficiency rates, lower chronic absenteeism, and higher SchoolDigger ratings. Despite the relatively high spending per student and low student-teacher ratio at Moos Elementary School, these resources do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes for students, suggesting the need for significant interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My grandchildren came to Moos far below grade level. I've seen my non-readers reading and the gap has begun to close. The staff has been great. Close Quote

Open Quote When my grandchildren came to live with me, they were way behind. I never thought my grandchildren would ever be interested in reading or anything school wise. Now my granddaughter is above her grade level in school and my grandson is reading, something I never thought would happen. He now reads signs and is excited about learning. You can't just look at present scores and evaluate how far the students have come. The staff at Moos all came together to give my grandchildren the best education they could ever get. I so appreciate them all. Jean Schwab Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
